Mekong Delta’s Hoa Loc mangoes are retailing for VND200,000 (US$7.7) per kilogram, up 33% from a year ago, due to a supply scarcity.
Many HCMC stores said they were able to secure only limited supplies of the fruit, a staple in the traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) fruit tray.
With the New Year coming around next week bigger and more eye-catching fruits are selling out quickly despite high prices, they said.
Nguyen Thi Loan, owner of a fruit store on Le Duc Tho Street in the city’s An Hoi Dong Ward, said she has only been selling around 150 kilograms of the fruit daily as against 200 kg last year before Tet.
The supply of other types of mangoes is also down, and so their prices have gone up too, Loan added.

Many large orchards have been unable to fruit in time for the holidays due to unfavorable weather.
Nguyen Thi Hong, who has over a hectare under mango in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap, said Hoa Loc yields are down 20-30% from last year.
As a result, farm-gate and wholesale prices have increased. At HCMC’s Thu Duc agricultural wholesale market, prices of the fruit rose by over 60% from last Tet to VND130,000 per kilogram.
A manager at the market said some businesses are also prioritizing exports, further straining local supply.
