Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, chairwoman of low-cost airline Vietjet Air, has an estimated net worth of $4 billion and ranks 1,039th in the list of the world’s richest, according to U.S. magazine Forbes.
The 55-year-old’s wealth stems mostly from her stake in Vietjet and HDBank.
Vietnam’s first self-made woman billionaire got the idea of launching a low-cost airline while she was a trader and predicted that demand for air travel would skyrocket in Vietnam.
In addition to aviation and banking, Thao also invests in technology, renewable energy and real estate, including hotels and coastal resorts.

Pham Thu Huong, vice chairwoman of Vietnam’s largest conglomerate Vingroup, is worth an estimated $2.6 billion, which makes her the world’s 1,578th richest person.
The 56-year-old has worked alongside her husband and Vingroup chairman Pham Nhat Vuong since his early entrepreneurial ventures in Ukraine, from where she has a master’s degree in international law from the National University of Kyiv, before the two returned to Vietnam.
The group’s core businesses include electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast, real estate developer Vinhomes and hospitality brand Vinpearl.
VinFast, Vietnam’s largest EV producer by market share, also has plants in India and Indonesia.
In 2020 she and her husband established the VinFuture Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at promoting innovation in areas such as health and sustainable development.
Pham Thuy Hang
The third richest woman in Vietnam is Pham Thuy Hang, vice chairwoman of Vingroup, with an estimated net worth of $1.9 billion.
The 51-year-old has worked alongside her sister and billionaire Huong and brother-in-law Vuong since their time in Ukraine.
Hang has a 3% stake in Vingroup while Huong has 4.4%. The sisters were the new Vietnamese entrants in Forbes’s billionaire list this year.
Vietnam now has eight billionaires with a combined net worth of nearly $40 billion, with Vuong alone accounting for 60%.
