Scheduled to be completed in 2030, the project in Can Gio District will cover 2,870 hectares and cost nearly $9 billion.
Can Gio, located 50 kilometers to the southeast of HCMC downtown, is the city’s only coastal district.
The urban area has been designed to be a coastal tourism, resort, smart city, high-tech service, and residential, and hotel area.
When completed it is expected to house 230,000 residents and attract nine million tourists annually.
While zoning plan, environmental impact assessment and feasibility study approvals have been granted, some other licenses are still awaited.
Vingroup has also sought permission for one of its subsidiaries to research and draw up a tourism development plan proposal for the area.
The government plans to make Can Gio an ecological city, preserving its biosphere reserve and developing its maritime economy, particularly a transshipment port and free-trade zone, and logistics, tourism, marine ecotourism, and renewable energy.
HCMC will build the Can Gio International International Transshipment Port at a cost of around $6 billion.
