Vietnamese Trade Minister Nguyen Hong Dien had a phone call with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer on Wednesday evening to launch bilateral trade negotiations.
The negotiation is an important one for Vietnam and the U.S. to outline the principles, scope, and roadmap for a future trade pact, according to Vietnam’s Department of Foreign Market Development.
Dien emphasized that Vietnam values its comprehensive strategic partnership with the U.S. and is committed to deepening economic ties in a balanced, stable, and sustainable way. He said Vietnamese authorities are open to addressing U.S. concerns and finding solutions that serve the mutual interests of both nations.
Greer commended the move by both countries to pursue trade negotiations, voicing his belief that they can identify effective solutions and foster economic cooperation in a sustainable manner.
The two officials agreed to maintain ongoing communication between negotiating teams to accelerate progress.
The talks come as the Trump administration has delayed implementing reciprocal tariffs on a number of trade partners, including Vietnam, for a 90-day period. In the meantime, a temporary 10% tariff remains in effect.
