The Malaysian state of Penang is working to register more varieties of local durian kampung from its orchards to further expand its portfolio of recognized durian species.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasized that Penang’s durian kampung is comparable in taste to the state’s premium hybrid varieties, Malay Mail reported.
“We have many high-quality durian kampung that are worthy of registration, and we encourage producers to consider registering their varieties to gain recognition,” he said at the launch of a durian outreach program at Rain Tree Farm in Taman Permatang Tinggi Indah.
Penang had recently registered two new hybrid varieties including Tupai King (D214) and Cenderawasih, bringing the total number of registered durian varieties to over 200.
“With over 200 registered varieties, we aim to add more to this list to promote them globally,” Chow said.
The state is promoting its durians internationally, targeting not only China and Singapore but also expanding into new markets in India, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Chow expressed confidence that these efforts will boost Penang’s agricultural sector, particularly its durian industry, providing economic benefits to rural areas and encouraging youth participation in agrotechnology and agrotourism.
Penang, especially its town of Balik Pulau, is home to numerous durian orchards producing some of the finest varieties, including Black Thorn, Musang King, and Ang Heh (Red Prawn).
Last year, Penang exported 67,203 kilograms of durians, with Musang King and Black Thorn among the most sought-after varieties, according to The Star.
