Dr. Huynh Tan Vu of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City said durian is rich in vitamins such as C, B6, A, folic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. It also contains key minerals including potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, zinc, and phosphorus.
With its dense nutritional content, durian may support immune health, aid digestion, reduce anemia symptoms, lower blood pressure, and help prevent cardiovascular disease.
It also contains antioxidants that help combat free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of cancer and premature aging. Other reported benefits include easing joint inflammation, supporting thyroid function, and relieving headaches, anxiety, and stress.
Some studies suggest durian may enhance reproductive health by improving sperm motility and reducing infertility risks in both men and women.
Professor Nguyen Duy Thinh, former lecturer at the Institute of Food Technology under Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said durians are often harvested in bulk before they ripen naturally. To meet growing demand, many sellers use chemicals to force ripening, which reduces the fruit’s flavor and may pose health risks.
To avoid chemically treated durian, Thinh recommended that consumers pay attention to two key indicators: the condition of the spikes and the stem.
Spikes
Naturally ripened durians typically have green, thick, and rounded spikes. In contrast, ones that are unripe or artificially ripened using chemicals tend to have sharp, pointed spikes and a bland, astringent texture.
Stems
A fresh, firm, greenish stem with no dark spots usually signals natural ripening. If the stem appears dry, withered, darkened, or has fallen off, it may suggest the durian was harvested prematurely or exposed to chemicals.
However, Thinh cautioned that visual signs alone may not be reliable, especially for those unfamiliar with how to judge durian quality. Ripeness can also depend on the variety, farming techniques, and harvesting methods.
For the best experience, consumers should buy from reputable suppliers that ensure quality and traceable origin.
